Bahasa Indonesia, the Indonesian language, is a member of the Malayo-Polynesian language family which is spoken throughout the Republic of Indonesia as that country's national language. It bridges the linguistic gaps among native speakers of more than two hundred different languages and dialects who make up the country's 124 million population (1971). Furthermore, Bahasa Indonesia is understood in neighboring Malaysia with a population of approximately 11 million, since both Bahasa Indonesia and the latter's national language have sprung from a common source, Malay.
Bahasa Indonesia is written in the Roman alphabet. The correspondences between spoken and written Indonesian are relatively consistent, in the sense that one letter or combination of letters stands for the same unit of sound. The pronunciation of your Indonesian instructors will vary a little, depending on the part of Indonesia from which they come. Always imitate the teacher with whom you are working as closely as possible. Many of the sounds will remind you of sounds in English, but most of them are a little different. Try to imitate the native speakers very exactly.
