Papermaking science and technology
The papermaking process, one of the biggest and most versatile in any industry, is a long and very complex process. It contains a great number of different unit processes, which work through different mechanisms to produce the desired effects on the fiber suspension, and subsequently, on the fibrous web. It starts with slushing of fibers and other raw materials in water, continues through paper machine and finishing operations and ends with packaging of paper or board. We have divided this large and complex subject into three volumes: Part 1, Stock Preparation and Wet End, Part 2, Drying, and Part 3, Finishing. The division is based on the process sequence, but is otherwise somewhat arbitrary, and other divisions would also have been possible. However, this division finally worked out very well in view of the available expertise, and the books are also roughly the same size.
