Книга бывшего узника Освенцима (№ 60355) Г. Лангбейна продожает исследование "структуры пространства" концлагеря, достаточно четко обрисованного в работе В. Софски, вышедшей за два года до этого. Построенная по контрасту "мир узников - мир охранников СС", книге анализируется невидимая связь между двумя пространствами. Сам автор, будучи немецким коммунистом, принадлежал к числу привилегированных заключенных. Он указывает на то, что воспоминания выживших страдают субъективными оценками в силу того, что многие из выживших не раз находились на грани смерти. Свою позицию Лангбейн считает более взвешенной и менее эмоциональной, так как от смерти его отделял высокий статус надзирателя по блоку. Кроме того, он был активным учасником движения лагерного Сопротивления, которое даже в Освенциме нацисты не смогли полностью искоренить. Также большой интерес имеют личные наблюдения автора, касающиеся изменений настроений эсесовцев в разные годы существования лагеря.
