Tideman N. Peace and justice are indivisible - all people must be treated justly for peace to prevail
// USA Today (Magazine) 1998. – 9/1/

There is a bumper sticker that says, "If you want peace, then work for justice. " At a superficial level, this simple slogan contains an important half-truth. At a deeper level, it contains a more profound half-truth. To understand these half-truths and why they are only half true, it is necessary to know what peace and justice are and to comprehend the relationship between the two.
The more obvious and superficial meaning of the above slogan is that people who are treated unjustly will prevent the attainment of peace until the wrongs to which they are subject are righted. Demonstrators shout: "No justice. No peace. " The apparent meaning of peace in this case is tranquility, the absence of strife, and if this meaning of peace is accepted, the slogan is true. One can not expect to end strife as long as people have unresolved grievances. The reason this is just half true, though, is that this meaning is merely a shadow of what peace really is.

The thought of the eighteenth century philosopher, Immanuel Kant, has been widely used and debated in international relations, especially in the past decade. Reflecting on this, Mark F. N. Franke ably demonstrates that Kant's thought does not cohere neatly with any of the disciplinary paradigms or concepts that have constituted the field. He also shows how many contemporary exponents of Ka...

State University of New York Press, 2000. 242 p. The historian Charles Tilly once famously observed that war made the state. But as war becomes increasingly unthinkable in the post-Cold War age, what will become of the state? In this extended essay on radical changes in the state's global role, Lipschutz argues that state authority and sovereignty were tightly linked to the geopolitical struggles of the last century. The Cold War further reinfor...

Cambridge University Press, 2004. 260 p. Shapcott investigates the question of justice in a culturally diverse world, asking if it is possible to conceive of a universal or cosmopolitan community in which justice to difference is achieved. Such recognition is most successfully accomplished through acts of...
