Machine leaing is the study of how to build computer programs that improve their performance at some task through experience. The hallmark of machine leaing is that it results in an improved ability to make better decisions. Machine leaing algorithms have proven to be of great practical value in a variety of application domains. Not surprisingly, the field of software engineering tus out to be a fertile ground where many software development and maintenance tasks could be formulated as leaing problems and approached in terms of leaing algorithms.
To meet the challenge of developing and maintaining large and complex software systems in a dynamic and changing environment, machine leaing methods have been playing an increasingly important role in many software development and maintenance tasks. The past two decades have witnessed an increasing interest, and some encouraging results and publications in machine leaing application to software engineering. As a result, a crosscutting niche area emerges. Currently, there are efforts to raise the awareness and profile of this crosscutting, emerging area, and to systematically study various issues in it. It is our intention to capture, in this book, some of the latest advances in this emerging niche area.

Издательство MIT Press, 2010, -581 pp. Machine learning is programming computers to optimize a performance criterion using example data or past experience. We need learning in cases where we cannot directly write a computer program to solve a given problem, but need example data or experience. One case where learning is necessary is when human expertise does not exist, or when humans are unable to explain their expertise. Consider the recognitio...

Издательство Chapman & Hall/CRC Press, 2004, -365 pp. Bayesian Artificial Intelligence, in our understanding, is the incorporation of Bayesian inferentialmethods in the development of a software architecture for an Artificial Intelligence (AI). We believe that important ingredients of such an architecture will be Bayesian networks and the Bayesian learning of Bayesian networks (Bayesian causal discovery) from observation and experiment. In t...

Издательство Springer, 2008, -256 pp. The objective of Document Analysis and Recognition (DAR) is to recognize the text and graphical components of a document and to extract information. With first papers dating back to the 1960’s, DAR is a mature but still growing research field with consolidated and known techniques. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) engines are some of the most widely recognized products of the research in this field, while...

Издательство Springer, 1997, -310 pp. Over the last several years, there has been a distinct flurry of research and development activity under the 'agents' banner in universities and research laboratories world-wide. It is worrying that agent technology is being promulgated by some as a panacea to a whole host of problems. Rampant use and misuse of the word 'agent', exaggerated claims and overselling of this nascent technology are giving currenc...

The papers from that workshop were published as Machine Learning: An Artificial Intelligence Approach, edited by Ryszard Michalski, Jaime Carbonell and Tom Mitchell. Machine Learning came to be identified as a research field in its own right as the workshops evolved into...
