With the help of computers and finite element analysis, practically all types and shapes of dam can now be assessed, even including studies of crack formation and seepage. Nevertheless, there is an acute demand for simple approximate methods of analysis for design studies, preliminary designs, estimates of quantities, checking and teaching.
In this book, those approximate methods of analysis which have proved useful in the author's more than 40 years of practice are presented and compared with in situ measurements. Emphasis is placed on the comprehension of mechanical behaviour and not on computational details. The methods presented should be of help to young dam engineers who lack practical experience.
All 26 fully worked numerical examples conce dams whose actual behaviour is known from in situ measurements. Comparisons of measurements and approximate analyses show how accurately the future behaviour of a dam can be predicted. The comparisons also show how small is the clearance which can be realized with a so-called 'exact' analysis.
To help the student master the subject, three fully worked preliminary design examples are presented in chapter 6 of this book.
