Bacaer N. A Short History of Mathematical Population Dynamics
Springer, 2010. - 158 pages.

As Eugene Wigner stressed, mathematics has proven unreasonably effective in the physical sciences and their technological applications. The role of mathematics in the biological, medical and social sciences has been much more modest but has recently grown thanks to the simulation capacity offered by mode computers.
This book traces the history of population dynamics -- a theoretical subject closely connected to genetics, ecology, epidemiology and demography -- where mathematics has brought significant insights. It presents an overview of the genesis of several important themes: exponential growth, from Euler and Malthus to the Chinese one-child policy; the development of stochastic models, from Mendel's laws and the question of extinction of family names to percolation theory for the spread of epidemics, and chaotic populations, where determinism and randomness intertwine.

The reader of this book will see, from a different perspective, the problems that scientists face when govements ask for reliable predictions to help control epidemics (AIDS, SARS, swine flu), manage renewable resources (fishing quotas, spread of genetically modified organisms) or anticipate demographic evolutions such as aging.

Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, 1975, -85 pp. Mathematical theories of populations have been derived and effectively used in many contexts in the last two hundred years. They have appeared both implicitly and explicitly in many important studies of populations: human populations as well as populations of animals, cells and viruses. Several features of populations can be analyzed. First, growth and age structure can be studied by...

This introduction to mathematical methods that are useful for studying population phenomena is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and will be accessible to scientists who do not have a strong mathematics background. The material is graded in mathematical difficulty. The earlier parts of the book involve elementary diference equations while later chapters present topics that...

As the species evolved, an interest grew in knowing and forecasting the size of various populations, such as animal herds that humans hunted for their food and clothing or crops their diet depended on. The first mathematical model for populations is attributed to Leonardo Pisano, better known as F...

Wiley, 2011. - 388 pages. Understanding Biostatistics looks at the fundamentals of biostatistics, using elementary statistics to explore the nature of statistical tests. This book is intended to complement first-year statistics and biostatistics textbooks. The main focus here is on ideas, rather than on methodological details. Basic concepts are illustrated with representations from history, followed by technical discussions on what different...
