Ferreira J., Dougados C., Whelan E. (Eds.) Jets from Young Stars: Models and Constraints
Springer, 2007, 228 pages

This volume contains the edited lecture notes of the First JETSET School on Jets from Young Stars: Models and Constraints, held by the Marie Curie Research and Training Network on JET Simulations, Experiments and Theory. At this school the lecturers gave an introduction to observational properties and basic models describing the launching and collimation mechanisms of jets. The first half of the book is devoted to general observational constraints, covering the outflow phenomenon in young stars, the identification of magneto-centrifugal processes as the main jet driving mechanism, and the magnetic interaction between the star and its accretion disc. The second half of the book is devoted to theoretical knowledge of magneto-hydrodynamic processes pertinent to the jet launching mechanism in young stars. This comprises a general introduction to magneto-hydrodynamics, a description of the role of MHD processes in Standard Accretion Discs, and the physics of steady state MHD outflows, from the basic concepts and equations to mode self-similar solutions. Further lectures detail the various classes of steady magnetic-wind models currently discussed in the context of protostellar jets.

Springer, 2006. - 182 Pages. Since the very beginning of astronomy, people have looked up sky and constructed patterns – the constellations – out of the almost random scattering of stars in the night sky. The fact that the constellations are still used to day reflects not their historical origins, but their usefulness in identifying bright stars in the rotating dome of the sky. Most people (and all astronomers) are familiar with, for example, th...

Springer, 2010, 252 pages Astronomical jets are key astrophysical phenomena observed in gamma-ray bursts, active galactic nuclei or young stars. Research on them has largely occurred within the domains of astronomical observations, astrophysical modeling and numerical simulations, but the recent advent of high energy density facilities has added experimental control to jet studies. Front-line research on jet launching and collimation require...

Sрringer, 2005, 494 pages Solar-type activity over the whole range of the electromagnetic spectrum is a phenomenon inherent in the majority of low- and moderate-mass main sequence stars. In this monograph observational results are summarized in a systematic and comprehensive fashion. The analysis of the various manifestations of such stellar activity leads to the identification of these phenomena with macroscopic non-linear processes in a magne...

Cambridge University Press, 2009, Pages: 332 Recent discoveries of planets around other stars and protoplanetary disks around young stars have led to a new understanding of how stars and planets form. This book provides a thorough, up-to-date, and concise overview of the physical processes involved in the formation of stars and the disks around them which ultimately form planets.Throughout the book, state-of-the-art theoretical models are inte...

Cambridge University Press, 1995, 324 Pages This book presents a summary of observational knowledge of the behavior of all chemical elements identified in stars. Whenever possible the behavior is described quantitatively, with the help of equivalent widths in different types of stars (e.g. dwarfs and supergiants), or different ionization stages, for both absorption and emission features. The authors also describe the behavior of isotopes, and th...

Springer, 2009. - 277 Pages. This is a book about the physics of stars and starlight. The story of starlight is truly fascinating. Astronomers analyze and interpret the light from stars using photometry and spectroscopy, then inspirational detective work combines with the laws of physics to reveal the temperatures, masses, luminosities and outer structure of these far away points of light. The laws of physics themselves enable us to journey to t...

Weinheim: WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 2004. – 661 pages. This textbook is the outgrowth of a course on the physics of compact objects, which we have taught at Cornell University since 1975. As a class, compact stars consist of white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes. As the endpoint states of normal stellar evolution, they represent fundamental constituents of the physical Universe. This book, like the course itself, is a product...

(Astrophysics and Space Science Library, Springer, 2010, 473 pages The study of stellar oscillations is the preeminent way to investigate the stability of stars and to interpret their variability. The theory of the linear, isentropic oscillations of isolated gaseous stars, and thus of compressible spherically symmetric equilibrium configurations, has largely been developed from the viewpoint of the hypothesis of the physical radial pulsations o...
