J?ger W., Rannacher R., Warnatz J. Reactive Flows, Diffusion and Transport: From Experiments via Mathematical Modeling to Numerical Simulation and Optimization
Springer, 2006. - 676 pages.

The articles in this volume summarize the research results obtained in the former SFB 359 "Reactive Flow, Diffusion and Transport" which has been supported by the DFG over the period 1993-2004. The main subjects are physical-chemical processes sharing the difficulty of interacting diffusion, transport and reaction which cannot be considered separately. Typical examples are the chemical processes in flow reactors and in the catalytic combustion at surfaces. Further examples are models of star formation including diffusive mass transport, energy radiation and dust formation and the polluting transport in soil and waters. For these complex processes mathematical models are established and numerically simulated. The modeling uses multiscale techniques for nonlinear differential equations while for the numerical simulation and optimization goal-oriented mesh and model adaptivity, multigrid techniques and advanced Newton-type methods are developed combined with parallelization. This modeling and simulation is accompanied by experiments.

The interaction of a fluid with a solid body is a widespread phenomenon in nature, occurring at different scales and different applied disciplines. Interestingly enough, even though the mathematical theory of the motion of bodies in a liquid is one of the oldest and most classical problems in fluid mechanics, mathematicians have, only very recently, become interested in a system...

As research in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) matured, CFD codes were routinely used for the simulation of fluid flows. Subsequently, mathematicians and engineers began examining the use of CFD algorithms and codes for optimization and control problems for fluid f...

Elservier, Physics Reports 287, 1997. р. 337-384 Abstract For fluid flow one has a well-accepted mathematical model: the Navier-Stokes equations. Why, then, is the problem of turbulence so intractable? One major difficulty is that the equations appear insoluble in any reasonable sense. (A direct numerical simulation certainly yields a "solution", but it provides little understanding of the process per se. ) However, three developments are begin...

Springer, 2004. 273 p. ISBN:3540406433 Large eddy simulation (LES) seeks to simulate the large structures of a turbulent flow. This is the first monograph which considers LES from a mathematical point of view. It concentrates on LES models for which mathematical and numerical analysis is already available and on related LES models. Most of the available analysis is given in detail, the implementation of the LES models into a finite element code...
