Boston: D.C. Heath & Co., - 950 р. I have attempted to explain a subject that is admittedly much too large and complicated to be mastered by anyone in a whole lifetime. It began to intrigue me forty-five years ago, when I was a student of the late Professor Egerton and lived in daily contact with other students drawn to Oxford from all over the empire. It provided the theme of my first book, which came out as I "went down, " and it has been...

London: Hambledon Continuum, 2003. - 462 p. Richard III is undoubtedly the dominant personality in this collection of essays, but not in his capacity as king of England. Richard was Duke of Gloucester far longer than he was king. For most of his career, he was a subject, not a monarch, the equal of the great nobility. He is seen here in the company of his fellows: Warwick the Kingmaker, Clarence, Northumberland, Somerset, Hastings a the Wydeville...

Oxford: Osprey Publishing, 2003. - 98 p. The Wars of the Roses raged from 1455 to 1485 - the longest period of civil war in English history. They barely affected the daily routine of the civilian population, yet for the leaders of the opposing houses of York and Lancaster, the wars were devastating. First hand accounts reveal how the lives of their women and children were blighted during three decades of war, as many of their male relatives met...

Publisher: Oxford University Press, 2006. 272 pages. Language: English. Victorian Britain is often considered as the high point of "laissez-faire," the place and the time when people were most "free" to make their own lives without the aid or interference of the State. This book, by leading historians of nineteenth-century state and society, asks to what extent that was true and, to the extent that it was, how it worked.

ISBN:0195059794 The relationship between church and state, indeed between religion and politics, has been one of the most significant themes in early modern English history. While scores of specialized studies have greatly advanced scholars' understanding of particular aspects of this period, there is no general overview that takes into account current scholarship. This volume discharges that task....
