Sakoda K. Optical properties of photonic crystals
Springer, 2005. - 2nd edition. - 253 pp.
This is the first comprehensive textbook on the optical properties of photonic crystals. It deals not only with the properties of the radiation modes inside the crystals but also with their peculiar optical response to exteal fields. A general theory of linear and nonlinear optical response is developed in a clear and detailed fashion using the Green's function method. The symmetry of the eigenmodes is treated systematically using group theory to show how it affects the optical properties of photonic crystals. Important recent developments such as the enhancement of stimulated emission, second harmonic generation, quadrature-phase squeezing, and low-threshold lasing are also treated in detail and made understandable. Numerical methods are also emphasized. Thus this book provides both an introduction for graduate and undergraduate students and also key information for researchers in this field. The second edition features a new chapter on superfluorescence and updated text and references throughout.

Princeton University Press, 1995. - 137 pp. "Photonic Crystals" is the first book to address one of the newest and most exciting developments in physics-the discovery of photonic band-gap materials and their use in controlling the propagation of light. Recent discoveries show that many of the properties of an electron in a semiconductor crystal can apply to a particle of light in a photonic crystal. This has vast implications for physicists, mate...

Springer, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2001, 165 pages Photonic Crystals: The Road from Theory to Practice explores the theoretical road leading to the practical application of photonic band gaps. These new optimal devices are based on symmetry and resonance and the benefits and limitations of hybrid "two dimensional" slab systems in three dimensions. The book also explains that they also signify a return to the ideal of an omnidirect...

Springer, 2005. - 430 pp. - Authors: Jean-Michel Lourtioz, Henri Benisty, Dominique Pagnoux, Vincent Berger, Jean-Michel Gerard, Daniel Maystre. Just like the periodical crystalline potential in solid-state crystals determines their properties for the conduction of electrons, the periodical structuring of photonic crystals leads to envisioning the possibility of achieving a control of the photon flux in dielectric and metallic materials. The use...
