decided to do so in a gradual way. His government built many schools
and sent many Afghans to foreign countries to get educated. Trained
teachers, technicians, and army officers returned with ideas and
knowledge gained in Europe, America, and the Soviet Union.
General Muhammad Daoud Khan, Zahir Shah’s brother-in-law,
served as prime minister in the 1950s. Daoud ran the country like a
dictatorship, and opponents finally forced him to resign in 1963. A
famine swept through Afghanistan in 1972, and Daoud, with support
from the Soviet Union, overthrew the monarchy in 1973. The king

islam is a religion practiced in many countries around the world. it is
based on the teachings of the prophet muhammad (570–632

lived in what is now the modern kingdom of saudi arabia. islam means
“submission” as in “submission to the will of god.” in islam, god is
known as allah. those who practice and believe in islam are known as
muslims.
muslims believe that muhammad was the last of the prophets.
among earlier prophets recognized under islam are abraham, moses,
david, and Jesus.
the revelations to muhammad are collected in a holy book known
as the Quran (often transliterated as Koran). the revelations are orga-
nized in order of length, from the shortest to the longest. Personal
sayings and teachings of muhammad, together with accounts of his
actions and his decisions, are collected in a separate volume, known as
the hadith. islam draws on both the Quran and the hadith.
although there are numerous sects of islam, the two major divi-
sions are the sunni and the shia (also known as shiite). shia tend to
believe that all government should be empowered by religious leaders.
the sunni usually accept the idea of a civil government separated from
religion. the sunni and shia also disagree about the line of descent
from the prophet muhammad and his family.
the majority of the population in the modern country of iran is
shia, and shia groups are found in other countries as well. in iraq,
under saddam hussein, most power rested with the minority arab
sunni population, who tended to suppress the rights of the shia major-
ity. in afghanistan, most of the population are sunni. one ethnic group
in afghanistan, the hazaras, however, are mostly shia.
