Chapter 7 Digital Page Layout for Print 251
Helpful Tips
Use the CONTROL panel docked at the top (or bottom) of the document •
window to access all character and paragraph attributes.
Keep body copy size between 7 and 11 point. •
Do not kern body copy; only kern type 24 point and larger. •
Avoid using horizontal and vertical scaling or skew, unless its use is justied •
by the design.
Know the default values for each attribute (for example, 0 is the default •
value for kerning). Attributes do not reset themselves, so be wary when you
create the next block of text: it will carry the previous block’s attribute set-
tings. If the type looks odd, reset its attributes to their default values.
technique Lesson 7.13: Formatting paragraph attributes
Digital page layout programs such as InDesign and QuarkXPress have robust
paragraph formatting tools that provide precise control over attributes such as
spacing before and after paragraphs, indentation, alignment, drop caps, justi-
cation, bullets and numbering, columns, and baseline grid alignment.
In digital page layout, the end of a paragraph is represented by a paragraph
marker, created by pressing the ENTER key. A paragraph, in typesetting terms, is
physical space, and does not necessarily need to have any characters or words in it:
when you press the ENTER key, you create vertical space in the document. You can
also create vertical space by adding space before or space after a paragraph. Space
is created on the right and left sides of the document by using indents and tabs.
Manipulating paragraphs is all about manipulating space on the page in rela-
tionship to the text. Paragraph formatting affects selected paragraphs only. Select
the text frame, however, and the entire block of text within the frame is affected.
To see the paragraph markers in your text, go to TYPE > SHOW HIDDEN
CHARACTERS. This will help you select the paragraphs that you want to format.
QuiCk StepS:
Alignment
Alignment can be horizontal or vertical. It is used to line up text within a text
frame, so it is affected by the size and proportions of the frame itself.
Text can be aligned ush left or ush right, justied, or centered. Aligning left
or right lines the paragraph ush to the left or right edge of the frame. (Flush left
