Verbs Ending in -care, -gare, -ciare, and -giare
Che cosa cerchi, Maria? What are you looking for, Mary? The verb used in this
question is cercare (to look for, to search). Notice the unusual spelling of the tu
verb form (cerchi). Certain verbs will have spelling variations in order to keep the
hard or soft sound of the consonant.
• If the verb ends in -care or -gare, the hard sound of the c and the g is
preserved by inserting an h before the tu and noi endings -i and -iamo.

• If the verb ends in -ciare or -giare, the -i- is dropped before adding the -i

that the soft sound of c and g is to be preserved.
