Woodhall S. Field Guide to Butterflies of South Africa
Struik Publishers, 2005. - 383 pages.

The Field Atlas of the determinant of the butterflies of South Africa includes more than 1800 photos taken in natural conditions, which greatly facilitates the identification of species.

A television advertisement was contrived to boost the sales of an aerosol insecticide, marketed by an inteational chemical company. Two chameleons, father and son. are on a branch with a large hairy fly perched nearby. "Yecch, dad - shall I zap him? " asks the son. The father pulls out his can and sprays the ugly fly stone-dead.

This distorted perception of the natural world was probably seen by millions of South Africans, whose revulsion for insects in general, and hairy flies in particular, would have been bolstered by this piece of gross misrepresentation - no doubt many bought the product from the local supermarket as a result. The artistic director from the advertising company had a happy client, and went on to the next job. oblivious to his part in increasing the intolerance of humans towards the little things that share our planet.
