В данной статье (извлечении из недавно опубликованной книги "Managing the 21st Century’s Sustainability Crises") Р. Хейнберг рассматривает определяющую роль источников энергии для человечества и считает, что наступил конец "эпохи изобилия", основанной на дешевых источниках энергии. Перед всемирными лидерами стоят четыре трудноразрешимые задачи: быстро снизить зависимость от ископаемых топлив, приспособиться к концу экономического роста, обеспечить устойчивую жизнь семи миллиардов людей в этих условиях, справиться с негативными последствиями столетнего роста, основанного на ископаемых топливах, для биосферы. По мнению автора, экономисты стремятся игнорировать биосферные ограничения, надеясь найти заменители дефицитных ресурсов и повысить эффективность, несмотря на рост сопутствующих затрат.
