Crystallographic texture or preferred orientation has long been known to strongly influence material properties. Historically, the means of obtaining such texture data has been though the use of x-ray or neutron diffraction for bulk texture measurements, or transmission electron microscopy (TEM) or electron channeling for local crystallographic information. In recent years, we have seen the emergence of a new characterization technique for probing the microtexture of materials. This advance has come about primarily through the automated indexing of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) pattes. The first commercially available system was introduced in 1994, and since then the growth of sales worldwide has been dramatic. This has accompanied widening applicability in materials science problems such as microtexture, phase identification, grain boundary character distribution, deformation microstructures, etc. and is evidence that this technique can, in some cases, replace more time-consuming TEM or X-ray diffraction investigations. The purpose of this book is to provide the fundamental basis for EBSD. The formation and interpretation of EBSD pattes and the gnomonic projection are described as the framework for materials characterization using EBSD. Traditional representation of texture in orientation space is discussed in terms of stereographic projections, pole figures, inverse pole figures, and orientation distribution functions before introducing the Rodrigues-Frank representation of crystallographic texture.

Статья. Опубликована в "Journal of materials science letters" 19 (2000)667–669, Издательство Kluwer Academic Publishers, 2000 г. Abstract. The synthesis of titanium diboride (TiB2) by reduction of carbon-coated titania (TiO2) mixed with boron carbide (B4C) was investigated. Degussa P-25 TiO2 with a surface area of about 50 m2/g powder and a 70/30% anatase to rutile phase, B4C with a surface area of about 18 m2/g were used as starting powders. TiO...

Woodhead Publishing, 2011, 282 pages Recent advances in techniques to characterize thin films in-situ during deposition could lead to an improved understanding of deposition processes and to better, faster, diagnosis of issues with the deposition process. In-situ characterization of thin film growth will provide a comprehensive review of this increasingly important topic, focusing on the techniques and concepts. Electron diffraction techniques...

2001. - 590 p. The electron theory of metals describes how electrons are responsible for the bonding of metals and subsequent physical, chemical and transport properties. This textbook gives a complete account of electron theory in both periodic and non-periodic metallic systems. The author presents an accessible approach to the theory of electrons, comparing it with experimental results as much as possible. The book starts with the basics of one...

Article. Progress in Materials Science 47 (2002) 1-161 Abstract: Laser nitriding can be described as the irradiation of metal surfaces by short laser pulses in nitrogen containing atmospheres. This may lead to a strong take-up of nitrogen into the metal and nitride formation which can improve the metal's surface properties, e.g. the hardness or the corrosion and wear resistance. Here, the laser nitriding of iron, carbon steel, stainless steel, an...
