Stump Gregory T. Inflectional Morphology: A Theory of Paradigm Structure (Cambridge Studies in Linguistics)
Hardcover: 328 pages.
Publisher: Cambridge University Press.
Edition: 1st edition.
Date: February 26, 2001.
A new contribution to linguistic theory, this book presents a formal framework for the analysis of word structure in human language. It sets forth the network of hypotheses constituting Paradigm Function Morphology, a theory of inflectional form. The book differs from other recent works on the same subject in that it treats inflectional morphology as an autonomous system of principles rather than as a subsystem of syntax or phonology and it draws on evidence from a diverse range of languages in motivating the proposed conception of word structure.

Cambridge Studies in Linguistics Pages: 303 Publisher: Cambridge University Press (2005) Quality: good: pdf Syncretism-where a single form serves two or more morphosyntactic functions-is a persistent problem at the syntax-morphology interface. It results from a 'mismatch', whereby the syntax of a language makes a particular distinction, but the morphology does not. This pioneering book provides the first full-length study of inflectional syncret...

For the past forty years, linguistics has been dominated by the idea that language is categorical and linguistic competence discrete. It has become increasingly clear, however, that many levels of representation, from phonemes to sentence structure, show probabilistic properties, as does the language faculty. Probabilistic linguistics conceptualizes categories as distributions and views knowledge of language not as a minimal set of categorical co...
