
The clock tower and campanile dominates Town Square, at the centre of
Stevenage, which was designated as the first new town in by Lewis
Silkin, the Minister of Town and Country Planning, whose portrait is seen on
the tower. The sculpture, ‘Joy-ride’ by Franta Belsky, was commissioned by the
Stevenage Development Corporation to symbolise the new town and the
arrival of a new generation.
