colonisation of the night by new technology. Advertising for the store
announced that ‘this house is dedicated to Woman’s Service first of all’, with
‘unaccustomed and luxurious appointments’ to make shopping pleasurable. It
also offered a ‘home-like lounge for smoking, and gentlemen are invited to
use it as they would their club’.
