In comparative constructions the word than is rendered in two ways:
• If two structures (nouns, substantives, or noun phrases) are compared by
one adjective, the preposition di is used.

• If two adjectives are used to compare the same structure (a noun, a
substantive, or a noun phrase), the word che is used instead.
Giovanni è più simpatico che John is nicer than he is intelligent.

Some adjectives have both regular and irregular comparative and superlative
forms.
buono good più buono or migliore better
cattivo bad più cattivo or peggiore worse
grande big più grande or maggiore bigger (older)
piccolo small più piccolo or minore smaller (younger)
Questo vino è buono, ma quello This wine is good, but that one is better.

To express very emphatically (very, very or the very most of something) as part of
the adjective, just drop the fi nal vowel and add -issimo.
buono change to buon- -issimo buonissimo very, very good
alto change to alt- -issimo altissimo very, very tall
grande change to grand- -issimo grandissimo very, very big
facile change to facil- -issimo facilissimo very, very easy
Giovanni è intelligentissimo. John is very very, very intelligent.
Anche Maria è intelligentissima. Mary is also very, very intelligent.

Adverbs of Comparison
Adverbs are compared in the same manner as adjectives. Note that the comparative
degree is the most frequently used form for adverbs.

Relative Pronouns
Throughout this book you have been using che to express that, which, or who. This
is called a relative pronoun. Relative pronouns connect two clauses, which are
essentially two mini-sentences. Note that in Italian che must be used, whereas in
English, the corresponding English form may be omitted.
La ragazza che legge il giornale The girl who is reading the newspaper
è italiana. is Italian.
After a preposition, however, the form cui is used instead of che.
La ragazza con cui hai parlato è The girl with whom you spoke is my
mia sorella. sister.
The pronoun chi is used to mean he, she, they, and who or more simply
whoever.

Chi va in Italia si divertirà. Whoever goes to Italy will enjoy himself/
herself.
And, fi nally, quello che means what in the sense of that which. It also has two
idiomatic forms: quel che or ciò che.
Quello che dici è vero. What (That which) you are saying is true.
Non sai quel che dici. You do not know what you are saying.
Ciò che dici non mi piace. I do not like what you are saying.
