The study of atmospheric chemistry as a scientific discipline goes back to the eighteenth century, when the principal issue was identifying the major chemical components of the atmosphere, nitrogen, oxygen, water, carbon dioxide, and the noble gases. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries attention tued to the so-called trace gases, species present at less than 1 part per million parts of air by volume (1 mol per mole). We now know that the atmosphere contains a myriad of trace species, some at levels as low as 1 part per trillion parts of air. The role of trace species is disproportionate to their atmospheric abundance; they are responsible for phenomena ranging from urban photochemical smog, to acid deposition, to stratospheric ozone depletion, to potential climate change.

Second edition, Cambridge University Press, 2010. This textbook provides a quantitative introduction to the Earth’s atmosphere for intermediate-advanced undergraduate and graduate students. It now includes a new chapter on the physics of climate change which builds upon material introduced in earlier chapters, giving the student a broad understanding of some of the physical concepts underlying this most important and topical subject. In contrast...

Wilеy-Blаckwell, 2008, 276 pages Whilst there is now overwhelming evidence that greenhouse-gas pollution is becoming the dominant process responsible for global warming, it is also clear that the climate system varies quite naturally on different time-scales. Predicting the course of future climate change consequently requires an understanding of the natural variability of the climate system as well as the effects of human-induced change. This...

Wiley - Blackwell Publishing, Oxford, 2009, 319 pp. - ISBN 978-1-4051-8542-4 In the 1980s, observations of the removal of ozone from the polar stratosphere and rapid scientific advances in understanding the chemical behaviour of a group of pollutants containing halogens lead to international action to curb the emissions of these compounds, with a view to avoiding ozone depletion of the stratosphere. Twenty years later we are faced with an equally...

De Gruyter, 2011. - 720 pages Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing the modern world. The chemistry of the air within the framework of the climate system forms the main focus of this monograph. This problem-based approach to presenting global atmospheric processes begins with the chemical evolution of the climate system in order to evaluate the effects of changing air composition as well as possibilities for interference within...
