university remains intact, you will be eligible for COBRA. This federal
mandate insures that you can keep your health insurance policy for at
least 12 months by continuing to pay the full cost of your premiums.
However, if your company is closing and canceling its health insurance
policy, you cannot receive COBRA coverage and will need to take other
steps to maintain health insurance coverage for yourself and your family.
6. Determine what vacation and sick leave benefits you will receive at clo-
sure. Many institutions require that you work during the final 2–4 weeks
prior to your final day of employment. If you have accrued vacation
time, you may wish to use it before your departure. Keep in mind that
this may be difficult to negotiate, depending on the circumstances of
your departure. If you initiate the exit, do not be surprised to face some
anger from supervisors or institutional representatives. They may man-
ifest this as a reluctance to authorize approval for a vacation at such a
late date. This is just one more reason to use your vacation time as you
earn it. Alternatively, if your company has used up its financial
resources in a last-ditch effort to secure investment capital, it may no
longer be able to honor paid vacation benefits to its staff.
INVENTORIES, CLEANUP, AND INSPECTIONS
A laboratory contains many toxic substances. Institutional, state, and fed-
eral regulations require a detailed inventory of these materials and docu-
mentation of their safe storage and disposal. Prepare inventories of
chemicals, biohazards, and radioisotopes in your laboratory. Arrange for
appropriate disposal of all chemicals, biohazardous materials, and radioac-
tive waste. If your company is closing its doors, these will represent a sig-
nificant (and probably unwelcome) additional expense. Nevertheless,
nothing should be left behind. If you are moving chemicals, determine with
the mover how these should be packed to meet Department of
Transportation and Department of Commerce regulations. Make sure that
the empty laboratory is inspected and certified as clean after your depar-
ture. This step will protect you from future liability. In a university, the envi-
ronmental and occupational health services department is likely to perform
this function. In many biotech companies renting space, the landlord will
contract this process to a private environmental inspection firm. It is in
your best interests legally to obtain and comply with such an inspection.
During the laboratory closure, particularly in industry, prepare a doc-
ument inventory. This can be a set of electronic discs with a complete set
of folders for experimental protocols, reports, methods, standard operat-
ing procedures (SOPs), manufacturing documents, publications, and
patents. A short notebook or table of contents for easy reference should
