The
thyroid
has
been almost completely replaced
by
firm,
homogeneous pale tissue which microscopically
was
amyloid.
Amyloid
goitre
is
relatively common
in
Papua
New
Guinea,
where
it
occurs
as
part
of a
primary amyloidosis syndrome,
the
other
main feature
of
which
is
normotensive renal failure.
