fiveminutes,halfofitconsumedintranslation.
Amidsttheteasing,thejokes,thelightrepartee,onehadtopayattention,
forMaowasputtingforwardmajorpointsinamannerdeliberatelyoffhandso
thatfailureoftheNixonvisitwouldnotinvolvealossofface.Hedelicatelyplaced
theissueofTaiwanonasubsidiarylevel,choosingtotreatitasarelativelyminor
internalChinesedispute;hedidnotevenmentionourmilitarypresencethere.

ourtalksonthisissue.
WhatconcernedMaothen,andevenmorefullywhenIsaw himlateralone
atgreaterlength,wastheinternationalcontext—thatis,theSovietUnion.Toa
longdisquisitionbyNixononthequestionofwhichofthenuclearsuperpowers,
theUnitedStatesortheSovietUnion,presentedagreaterthreat,Maoreplied:
“Atthepresenttime,thequestionofaggressionfromtheUnitedStatesor
aggressionfromChinaisrelativelysmall…Youwanttowithdrawsomeofyour
troopsbackonyoursoil;oursdonotgoabroad.”Inotherwords,byaprocessof
elimination,theSovietUnionwasclearlyMao’sprincipalsecurityconcern.Equally
importantwastheellipticalassurance,laterrepeatedbyChou,whichremoved
thenightmareoftwoadministrationsthatChinamightinterveneinIndochina
