Jacobs R. et al Measuring Efficiency in Health Care: Analytic Techniques and Health Policy
Cambridge University Press – 2006, 262 pages
ISBN: 0521851440

With the healthcare sector accounting for a sizeable proportion of national expenditures, the pursuit of efficiency has become a central objective of policymakers within most health systems. However, the analysis and measurement of efficiency is a complex undertaking, not least due to the multiple objectives of health care organizations and the many gaps in information systems. In response to this complexity, research in organizational efficiency analysis has flourished. This book examines some of the most important techniques currently available to measure the efficiency of systems and organizations, including data envelopment analysis and stochastic frontier analysis, and also presents some promising new methodological approaches. Such techniques offer the prospect of many new and fruitful insights into health care performance. Nevertheless, they also pose many practical and methodological challenges. This is a timely critical assessment of the strengths and limitations of efficiency analysis applied to health and health care.

By adopting the Single Farm Payment (SFP) scheme only limited support for agriculture is tied to current production decisions. This is also true of U.S. farm policy. The reform act of 1996 introduced greater planting flexibility, shifted...

Springer – 2007, 267 pages ISBN: 0387351558 The topic of production efficiency has attracted attention since Adam Smith’s pin factory and even before. However, a rigorous analytical approach to the measurement of efficiency in production originated with the work of Koopmans (1951) and Debreu (1951), empirically applied by Farrell (1957). Farrell’s seminal work gave rise to a considerable amount of studies. The basic idea of efficiency analysis i...

The authors construct a variety of production frontiers, and by measuring distances to them are able to develop a model of efficient producer behavior and a taxonomy of possible types of departure from efficiency in various environments. Linear programming is used...

Springer | English | 2008 | ISBN: 0387859810 | 334 pages | It is difficult to evaluate an organization's performance when there are multiple inputs and multiple outputs to the system. The difficulties are further enhanced when the relationships between the inputs and the outputs are complex and involve unknown tradeoffs. This book introduces DEA as a multiple-measure performance evaluation and benchmarking tool. The focus of performance evaluatio...
