Livio M. The Equation That Couldn't Be Solved: How Mathematical Genius Discovered the Language of Symmetry
Simоn & Schustеr, 2006. - 368 pages.

What do Bach's compositions, Rubik's Cube, the way we choose our mates, and the physics of subatomic particles have in common? All are goveed by the laws of symmetry, which elegantly unify scientific and artistic principles. Yet the mathematical language of symmetry-known as group theory-did not emerge from the study of symmetry at all, but from an equation that couldn't be solved.
For thousands of years mathematicians solved progressively more difficult algebraic equations, until they encountered the quintic equation, which resisted solution for three centuries. Working independently, two great prodigies ultimately proved that the quintic cannot be solved by a simple formula. These geniuses, a Norwegian named Niels Henrik Abel and a romantic Frenchman named ?variste Galois, both died tragically young. Their incredible labor, however, produced the origins of group theory.
The first extensive, popular account of the mathematics of symmetry and order, The Equation That Couldn't Be Solved is told not through abstract formulas but in a beautifully written and dramatic account of the lives and work of some of the greatest and most intriguing mathematicians in history.

Dеlta, 1997. - 160 pages. Over three hundred years ago, a French scholar scribbled a simple theorem in the margin of a book. It would become the world's most baffling mathematical mystery. Born in 1601, Pierre de Fermat lived a quiet life as a civil servant in Toulouse, France. In his spare time, however, Fermat dabbled in mathematics, and somehow managed to become one of the great mathematical theorists of his century. Around 1637 he scribble...

Springer, 2008. - 377 pages. This book presents first-year calculus roughly in the order in which it first was discovered. The first two chapters show how the ancient calculations of practical problems led to infinite series, differential and integral calculus and to differential equations. The establishment of mathematical rigour for these subjects in the 19th century for one and several variables is treated in chapters III and IV. The text is...

The Mathematical Association of America, 2000. - 261 pages. There is a long tradition of relating the history of mathematics to its teaching, and increasingly this has extended throughout mathematical education. This volume brings together articles from well known figures in this area, and provides many insights, both in particular cases and in generality, into how the history of mathematics can find application in the teaching of mathematics it...

Mathematical Association of America, 2010. - 381 pages. An Episodic History of Mathematics delivers a series of snapshots of the history of mathematics from ancient times to the twentieth century. The intent is not to be an encyclopedic history of mathematics, but to give the reader a sense of mathematical culture and history. The book abounds with stories, and personalities play a strong role. The book will introduce readers to some of the gene...

Springer, 1998. - 302 pages. The stories of five mathematical journeys into new realms, pieced together from the writings of the explorers themselves. Some were guided by mere curiosity and the thrill of adventure, others by more practical motives. In each case the outcome was a vast expansion of the known mathematical world and the realisation that still greater vistas remain to be explored. The authors tell these stories by guiding readers thr...

For millennia, Euclidean geometry, the geometry of the ancient Greeks, set the standard for rigor in mathematics—it was the only branch of mathematics that had been developed axiomatically. Euclidean geometry, most philosophers and mathematicians agreed, was the language of mathematics. However, early in the 19th century, mathematicians developed geometries very different from Euclid’s simply by choosing axioms...

Created during the Stone Age, humans were hunting mammoths when these pictures were painted. The first w...
