SouthVietnameseThirdDivisionwasdestroyed.TheNorthVietnamesecaptured
theirfirstprovincialcapitalwhenQuangTricityfellonMay1,andmostofthe
provincewasdoomed.ManySouthVietnameseunitspanicked.Withoutplansfor
orderlyretreat,desertedbytheirofficers,SouthVietnamesesoldiersand
thousandsofciviliansheadedforHué.NorthVietnameseartillerypoundedthe
refugeecolumnmercilessly.Weestimated20,000casualties,alargepercentage
ofthemcivilians.OverathousandcivilianswerekilledwhenNorthVietnamese
troopsdeliberatelyshelledtherefugeesfleeingSouth.Indeed,thenumberof
refugeesthusambushedandkilledintheretreatfromQuangTriwasalmost
certainlymorethanthetotalcasualtiesclaimedbyNorthVietnamfromtheB‐52
