moments.NixonwasindeedliketheShahinhiswithdrawnshyness.TheShah
tenderedthePresidentalavishwhite‐tiedinner.AtitsconclusionNixonhadto
improvisea toastbecausetheglareofthetelevisionlightsblindedhimandvanity
preventedhimfromwearingglasseswhenhewasbeingtelevised.Thetoastwent
alongwellenoughbutNixondidnotquiteknowhowtoconcludeit.Threetimes
hecametowhatcouldhaveservedasanexcellentstoppingpoint,butdecidedto
goaroundthetrackagain.Onthefourthattempthethoughthehadhitupona
felicitousconclusion:HequotedanobservationofPresidentEisenhowerthat,
