implication,nouniversallyrecognizedorauthorizedsingletranslation,oredition
intranslation,oftheQur’ān.
TranslationsoftheQur’ān:ahistoricaloverview
EarlymessagesfromtheProphetMuhammadtopoliticalrulersofthetime,such
asEmperorHeraclius(c.610–41)oftheEasternRomanEmpireandal
Muqawqis,hisviceroyinCopticEgypt,includedanayafromtheQur’ān.Itcan
onlybeassumedthattranslationsofthesemessageswereundertakenby
translatorsemployedbythereceivers,oratleastbypersonsfamiliarwith
Arabicintheirparticularcountry.Thefirstayawhichmayhavebeentranslated
inthisfashionislikelytobenumber64inthesuraofalImran(alZafzaf
1984).Pickthall(1930/1992)translatesitasfollows:
Say:OPeopleoftheScripture!Cometoanagreementbetweenusandyou:
thatweshallworshipnonebutAllah,andthatweascribenoPartneruntoHim,
andthatnoneofusshalltakeothersforlordsbesideAllahandiftheyturn

Theothercandidateisayanumber29inthesuraofalTawba,translatedby
ZidanandZidan(1991)as:

Religion(Islam),fromamongthepeopleofearlierScripture,untiltheypaythe

Thefirst‘translations’oftheQur’ānappearedinPersianduringthereignofthe
Abbasids(c.750–1258).UndertakenbyPersianconvertstoIslam,thesewere
primarilycommentaries,buttheynonethelesscontainedmuchwordforword
translation(seePERSIANTRADITION).Thefirst‘proper’translationofthe
fulltext,byRobertofChester,wasintoLatin;itwassponsoredin1143by
PetertheVenerable,AbbotofCluny,withtheexplicitaimofrefutingthebeliefs
ofIslam(Hitti1937/1990:126).Sincethen,thebookhasbeentranslatedinto
almostalllanguagesoftheworld,andmorethanonceintomanyofthem.In
Europe,theArabictextoftheQur’ānwasfirstprintedinVenicein1530,
followedshortlybytheLatintranslationofRobertofKettoninBaslein1543
(WattandBell1970).
ThefirsttranslationintoEnglishwasmadebytheScotsmanAlexanderRossin
1649.Thiswasanindirecttranslation(seeRELAY),basedonaFrenchversion
bytheSieurduRyer(WattandBell1970:201;Hitti1937/1990:126)and,like
theLatintranslationsponsoredbytheAbbotofCluny,haddubiousaims,as
canbeseenfromitstitle‘…AndnewlyEnglished,forthesatisfactionofallthat
desiretolookintotheTurkishvanities’.Morecarefulandscholarlytranslations
followed.NotableamongthesewerethetranslationsintoLatinbyLudovici
Marracciin1698,intoEnglishbyGeorgeSalein1734andBellin1937/1939
(WattandBell1970,chapter11andpp.200–1).
Bell’stranslationisofparticularinterestsinceitwasnotjustatranslationbut
alsoa‘criticalrearrangementoftheSurahs’(ibid.:177).Byandlarge,thereis
consensusamongmostQur’ānictranslatorstouseassourcetextthe‘Uthmanic
Recension’,i.e.thecanonicalversionsanctionedbyUthmanibnAffaninthe
seventhcentury,referredtoearlier,whichhasasetorderbasedmainlyonthe
lengthofeachsura.Bellwasoneofasmallnumberoftranslators,including
Rodwell(1861),whosawfittorearrangethesura(s)oftheQur’ānon
chronologicalgrounds.Mosttranslationsinprintdonotjustfollowtheorderof
theUthmanicRecensionbutalsoensurethattheindividualaya(s)ineachsura
aregivennumbersinthesamefashionastheArabictexts,whichmakesforease
ofcrossreferencing,comprehension,accuracyandinterpretationofboth
