Светлой памяти Романа Осиповича Якобсона
ПРЕДИСЛОВИЕ
Предлагаемая книга связана по происхождению с книгой под от-
части сходным названием «Очерки по истории семиотики в СССР»,
которая была издана в 1976 г. Но в настоящем издании повторяется с
существенными дополнениями и изменениями лишь небольшая часть
двух глав предыдущей книги (две другие, в которых говорилось пре-
имущественно об Эйзенштейне, выделены в отдельное сочинение, ко-
торое в новом переработанном виде печатается одновременно в этом
же томе). Автор продолжал заниматься ранними этапами семиотиче-
ских штудий и их предысторией. Результаты этих занятий, за по-
следние годы публиковавшиеся преимущественно в статьях, написан-
ных по-английски и по-немецки, здесь впервые излагаются по-русски.
Не ставя перед собой задачи исчерпывающего описания всех ран-
них систем, в которых можно усмотреть сходство с семиотикой, автор
сосредоточил внимание на тех линиях, которые прямо связаны с
двумя главными ее направлениями, основанными Пирсом в Америке
и Соссюром в Европе. Особый интерес, как и в первой книге, при-
влекли семиотические труды отечественных авторов.
Из них на меня наиболее глубокое влияние оказали семиотические
интересы, выраженные в докладах, статьях, книгах и беседах Романа
Осиповича Якобсона. Его памяти я посвящаю книгу, выходящую
двумя годами позже его столетнего юбилея.
ЧАСТЬ ПЕРВАЯ
НА ЗАРЕ ИЗУЧЕНИЯ ЗНАКОВ
ГЛАВА 1. МИФ ОБ ИМЕНАХ И ИХ СОЗДАТЕЛЕ
Один из двух основателей современной семиотики Фердинанд де
Соссюр был вместе с тем едва ли не первым, кто предположил суще-
ствование длительной древней традиции, позволяющей думать, что
знаки и слова-символы, употребляющиеся в знаковой функции, давно
уже обратили на себя внимание. Первоначальные размышления о них
принимали форму мифов или мифопоэтических текстов. Пользуясь
методами сравнительно-исторического языкознания и сравнительной
мифологии, можно реконструировать эти древние предсемиотические
представления. К ним, в частности, принадлежит миф об установле-
нии имен. Он отражает достаточно ранний этап в развитии мифопо-
этических представлений об отношениях между словом и вещью.
Возможно, что древние его формы были связаны и с древним ритуа-
лом инвокации — называния-творения вещей, не имеющих имени.
Этот миф для восточно-индоевропейского (греческо-арийского) перио-
да (4-3 тыс. до н. э.) удается восстановить благодаря совпадению
многих его языковых деталей в древнегреческой и индоиранской
(арийской) традициях. В Ригведе рассказывается о древних риши —
певцах, дающих имена вещам, и о богах, нарекающих именем (пата
«имя» + dha — «поставить, положить, нарекать», Елизаренкова 1993,
с. 101-102, 217). Среди нарекающих именами — сами риши, первые
жрецы: bfhaspate prathamarp vac6 agraip у at prairata namadheyam dadhunah «О
Брихаспати, первое начало Речи возникло, Когда они приступили к
действию, производя установление имен» (RV, X, 71,1)
Эта формула в применении к риши встречается в этом тексте в
связи с описанием древних риши, хотя формально гимн и обращен к
Брихаспати — богу-покровителю молитвы, Господину Речи (Schmidt
1967).
Гимн «Познание» несомненно отражает весьма архаическую
традицию, относящуюся к риши, в частности, он описывает «содру-
жество» или корпорацию (sakhya-) риши (Елизаренкова 1993, с. 31).
Кажется вероятным, что в таком корпоративном гимне певцов долж-
ны содержаться и сокровенные сведения об их главных действиях,
совершенных в мифологическом прошлом (ср. Кейпер 1986; Бибихин
1974).
